Reconstruction of Eleutherias square in Thessaloniki

Intention of the proposal is the emergence of Thessaloniki’s memory and history by designing a symbol for the city and creating a digital mnemonic network with spatial characteristics. Main goal at the same time, is the repossession of Eleftheria Square, its reconnection with the urban fabric and the urge for public participation to mold the new public space.
The need to design a symbol led to a construction that rises above the ground and imposes itself on the space below. An array of linear elements that scatters on the square’s ground bears the memory of characteristic symbols and historical moments of the city. An intelligence network, comprised of these elements is distributed in space and invites the users – through personal journeys – to explore the city history and memory.
The organization of pedestrian movement to and from the square facilitates the reconnection with the city. Larger routes of the perimeter and parking space removal help extend the borders of the square on the Venizelou and Dragoumi st fronts, so as to receive bigger pedestrian circulation.
A course perpendicular to the square is plotted to connect the historical centre of Thessaloniki with the district of Ladadika through the existing pedestrian zones of Kalapothaki and Oplopoiou streets. This move also forms two distinct on-site areas.
On a diagonal axis and on a North-South orientation, the central opening takes shape, which constitutes the main flow point toward the square from the waterfront and the port. This provision marks the place as a gate from the sea. The existing vegetation positions, in combination with movement intersections compose the new planting chart.
A small pavilion and a bus stop complete the renovation on the Mitropoleos street front. In this part, parking spaces are provided for consultates, banks and TV channels adjacent to the square.
